The Gibson Les Paul Custom '70s brings one of the most recognizable “Black Beauty” eras back to the Gibson USA lineup. After spending years as a model primarily associated with the Custom Shop, Gibson revived the Les Paul Custom in its Original Collection with a distinctly 1970s-inspired specification set—including a maple neck with a volute, multi-ply binding, and era-correct electronics.
Visually, the guitar delivers everything players expect from a Les Paul Custom: the tuxedo-style ebony finish, gold hardware, multi-layer binding, and the famous split-diamond headstock inlay. Underneath those appointments sits a mahogany body paired with a three-piece maple top, giving the instrument the powerful sustain and clarity that helped define countless rock recordings throughout the 1970s.
The neck construction also leans into the decade that inspired it. A maple neck with a pronounced volute and ’70s profile adds stability and a slightly brighter tonal response compared to the traditional mahogany necks found on many Les Paul models. The bound ebony fingerboard with mother-of-pearl block inlays completes the classic Custom aesthetic while offering a fast, smooth playing surface. Electronics come courtesy of a pair of calibrated T-Type humbuckers—Gibson’s nod to the late-’60s/’70s T-Top pickup design. These pickups deliver articulate mids, tight low end, and a crisp top-end response that works equally well for classic rock crunch, articulate clean tones, and modern high-gain sounds. With its unmistakable look and period-correct features, the Les Paul Custom ’70s captures the spirit of an era when this model became synonymous with players like Randy Rhoads, Ace Frehley, and John Sykes.
