Living Machines: The Electric Guitars of Collings

When you hold a Collings guitar, you’re not just holding wood and wire—you’re holding decades of relentless curiosity, engineering precision, and a passion for perfection. Though Collings Guitars is world-renowned for its breathtaking acoustics, the company’s foray into electric guitars has built a reputation every bit as formidable.

A Legacy of Precision

The story of Collings electric guitars begins long before the first humbucker was ever installed. In the early 1970s, Bill Collings left his pre-med studies at Ohio University, trading textbooks for toolboxes and a future in engineering and machining. By the mid-1970s, he’d relocated to Houston, Texas, balancing a day job in oil-field engineering with late nights crafting guitars at his kitchen table. It wasn’t long before his instruments found the hands of local musicians, including a young Lyle Lovett, who bought a guitar from Bill after interviewing him for his college newspaper.

By the 1980s, Collings had set up shop in Austin, Texas, sharing workspace with other luthiers like Tom Ellis and Mike Stevens. His reputation for meticulous craftsmanship spread quickly. In 1989, legendary vintage guitar dealer George Gruhn commissioned 24 guitars, cementing Collings’ national presence. The company expanded steadily, moving into larger facilities, adopting CNC technology to complement hand craftsmanship, and growing a dedicated team of artisans—all committed to Bill’s vision: there are no shortcuts.

The Electric Revolution

While acoustics established the Collings name, Bill’s restless curiosity naturally led him to electrics. At the 2006 Summer NAMM Show, Collings introduced its first electric guitars, and players were captivated. Far from merely copying classic designs, Collings electrics blend vintage inspiration with modern innovation, delivering exceptional tone, playability, and build quality.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the stars of the Collings electric family:

290

Named after Highway 290, which runs near the Collings factory, the 290 is a love letter to rock and roll simplicity. Outfitted with a pair of hand-wound P90 pickups from renowned pickup maker Jason Lollar, the 290 delivers punchy mids, articulate highs, and a raw, expressive character. It’s the perfect tool for players seeking vintage-inspired grit with modern precision.

360

Reminiscent in silhouette to a Gibson Les Paul but slimmer and lighter, the 360 offers comfort without sacrificing sustain or tonal depth. It’s a versatile instrument for players who love classic single-cut looks but want a more ergonomic experience.

CL and CL Deluxe (City Limits)

Crafted from seasoned maple and Honduran mahogany, the City Limits series embodies Collings’ commitment to detail and tone. These guitars are lightweight yet substantial, featuring a contoured body and a meticulously hand-set mortise and tenon neck joint. The CL models capture the singing sustain and resonance of vintage single-cut guitars while maintaining Collings’ signature clarity and responsiveness.

I-35

Named after Austin’s bustling I-35 highway, the I-35 takes cues from the legendary Gibson ES-335. However, Collings refines the concept with a slightly smaller 15-inch body width and subtle angular styling that makes it more comfortable and lighter in weight. The result is an instrument equally at home delivering sweet jazz lines, crunchy rock rhythms, or singing leads, all with Collings’ impeccable craftsmanship.

SoCo Deluxe

The SoCo Deluxe—its name a nod to South Congress Avenue in Austin—is a hybrid that marries elements from the I-35 and City Limits models. It’s designed for players who crave semi-hollow warmth but also want solid-body punch and sustain. It’s a perfect example of how Collings isn’t bound by tradition but instead blends designs to create unique sonic palettes.

Instruments as “Living Machines”

Bill Collings once described guitars as “living machines.” It’s a fitting phrase—because every Collings electric guitar isn’t merely assembled; it’s sculpted with an artisan’s touch and an engineer’s precision. Each piece of wood is carefully selected and seasoned. Every joint is fitted with microscopic accuracy. Electronics are installed with both tonal integrity and technical finesse in mind.

Even though Collings utilizes modern CNC machinery for certain parts, the critical processes remain deeply hands-on. Sanding, neck shaping, fretting, binding, finishing—all are executed by skilled craftspeople who treat every instrument like a one-of-a-kind creation.

Carrying the Torch

Following Bill Collings’ passing in 2017, the team at Collings Guitars has carried forward his vision with unwavering dedication. The Austin shop continues to produce electric guitars that blend tradition, innovation, and the brand’s uncompromising pursuit of excellence.

Whether you’re a vintage purist, a modern rocker, or a studio professional, Collings electric guitars offer something extraordinary: instruments that feel alive, sound magnificent, and are built to inspire for generations.
