The Gibson J-45 has been a cornerstone of the acoustic guitar world for generations. It’s known for its warm, balanced voice, comfortable feel, and ability to work equally well for strumming, flatpicking, fingerstyle, and songwriting. For our latest Detroit Guitar Dealer Select, we wanted to keep everything players love about the J-45 and make one meaningful change.

What Makes Our Dealer Select Different?
The defining feature of this Dealer Select is its Adirondack red spruce top.
Paired with solid mahogany back and sides, red spruce gives this J-45 more headroom, projection, and dynamic range. Play it lightly and it remains responsive and articulate. Dig in harder and the guitar has room to keep giving without the sound becoming compressed.
That makes the difference particularly noticeable for players with a strong right hand, but it isn't simply about making the guitar louder. Red spruce brings a bold, clear response with tight bass, defined mids, and crisp highs while retaining the warmth and balance associated with a great J-45.
It’s also a top wood that continues to develop as the instrument is played and ages.
Everything Else You Want From a J-45
We didn't want to reinvent the J-45. The red spruce top is the upgrade, while the rest of the guitar stays rooted in the familiar formula that has made the model so successful.
It features a round-shoulder dreadnought body, solid mahogany back and sides, traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing, a mahogany SlimTaper neck, rosewood fingerboard, and a 24.75" scale length.
For plugged-in playing, Gibson equips it with an L.R. Baggs VTC system with an under-saddle pickup and discreet soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls.
The Antique Natural gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish completes the package, giving the guitar a clean, understated appearance that puts the focus on the wood itself.
A J-45 With Something Extra
