Gibson Updates the J-45 Standard with New HiFi DNA Electronics
Gibson has updated the J-45 Standard for 2026, pairing the familiar round-shoulder acoustic with the new Gibson-exclusive Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system. The core construction remains familiar, with a solid Sitka spruce top, mahogany back and sides, traditional scalloped X-bracing and a 24.75" scale length, but the new electronics represent a significant change in how the J-45 performs when amplified.
New Baggs HiFi DNA Electronics
The biggest update is the HiFi DNA system, developed by Gibson and Baggs to capture more of the guitar’s natural acoustic response when plugged in. Rather than using a traditional under-saddle pickup, the system uses two lightweight sensors mounted to the bridge plate inside the guitar.
That placement allows the sensors to respond to movement from the soundboard as well as the strings, capturing more of the J-45’s body resonance, dynamics and character. Each sensor feeds its own custom-voiced Class A preamp before the signals are combined, with volume and tone controls positioned discreetly inside the soundhole.
Because there is no pickup installed beneath the saddle, the system also avoids placing additional material between the saddle and bridge. Gibson designed HiFi DNA to provide the gain-before-feedback needed for live performance while maintaining the guitar’s natural acoustic response when it isn't plugged in.
The Familiar J-45 Formula
Beyond the electronics, Gibson has stayed close to the established J-45 Standard design. The guitar features a solid Sitka spruce top with solid mahogany back and sides, traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing and a mahogany neck with Gibson’s SlimTaper profile. A rosewood fingerboard and traditional rosewood belly-up bridge are paired with a TUSQ saddle and bridge pins, while Grover Rotomatic tuners handle tuning duties.
The Vintage Sunburst finish is applied in gloss nitrocellulose lacquer, and the guitar includes a Gibson hardshell case.
The result is less of a redesign of the J-45 Standard and more of an important electronics update. Players still get the construction, feel and acoustic character associated with the modern J-45 Standard, but with a pickup system designed specifically to provide a more complete representation of that sound when the guitar is plugged in.
The new Gibson J-45 Standard with HiFi DNA in Vintage Sunburst is available now at Detroit Guitar.
