Detroit Guitar’s Custom Taylor Collection: Rare Woods, NAMM Selections, and One-of-a-Kind Builds

At Detroit Guitar, we’ve always believed that some of the most exciting instruments Taylor makes never appear in a standard catalog. They live in the world of Taylor Custom builds—guitars designed around rare tonewoods, experimental pairings, and visual details that push beyond the production line.

Right now, our shop is home to a remarkable collection of Custom Taylors, including several guitars we personally ordered at the Taylor Catch Event during the NAMM Show. For those unfamiliar, the Catch Event is a special opportunity held during NAMM where Taylor dealers can select and order exclusive custom builds that are not available anywhere else. If a guitar in this collection references NAMM, it means it was secured during that event—making it part of a limited run that could only be ordered there.

From sinker redwood and cocobolo to Port Orford cedar and Honduran rosewood, these instruments represent some of the most unique tonewood combinations currently available from Taylor.

Let’s take a closer look.

Taylor Custom Grand Auditorium Port Orford Cypress / Honduran Rosewood

This stunning Grand Auditorium pairs Port Orford cedar with Honduran rosewood, a combination that blends warmth, articulation, and a complex overtone profile. Port Orford cedar offers a quick response similar to red cedar but with remarkable clarity, while Honduran rosewood delivers deep lows and shimmering high-end detail.

The result is a guitar with an immediate, expressive voice—equally suited for delicate fingerstyle passages or dynamic strumming.

Taylor Custom C14e B6034 Gold Label Super Auditorium Sinker Redwood / Cocobolo

Sinker redwood and cocobolo is a pairing that commands attention, both visually and tonally. Sinker redwood—recovered from old-growth logs that spent decades submerged in riverbeds—delivers warmth and responsiveness reminiscent of cedar, while cocobolo adds piano-like low end and striking harmonic richness.

This particular build features Taylor’s Gold Label Super Auditorium design, giving it impressive projection and balance.

Taylor Custom C24ce B6002 Grand Auditorium Figured Hawaiian Koa / Indian Rosewood with Koa Wedge

Few tonewoods capture attention quite like figured Hawaiian koa, and this Custom build showcases it beautifully. The koa top provides a bright, lively attack that gradually warms and deepens with playing time, while Indian rosewood adds low-end authority and sustain.

The figured koa wedge between the back plates ties the aesthetic together, making this guitar as visually compelling as it is musically versatile.

Taylor Custom NAMM 2025 Special C14ce B5003 Grand Auditorium Sinker Redwood / Black Limba

This guitar was ordered by Detroit Guitar at the Taylor Catch Event during the NAMM Show, the only place dealers can select and order these exclusive builds.

Sinker redwood paired with black limba creates a tone profile that is both warm and articulate. The redwood top responds effortlessly to a light touch, while limba contributes a woody midrange character with a unique openness.

Taylor Custom Grand Concert All‑Mahogany

There’s something timeless about an all-mahogany guitar, and this Grand Concert captures that character beautifully. Mahogany tops are known for their focused midrange and woody warmth, producing a voice that sits perfectly in recordings and fingerstyle arrangements.

The Grand Concert body keeps the response tight and intimate, making this guitar a perfect companion for players who value clarity and balance over sheer volume.

The Beauty of Taylor Custom Builds

One of the most exciting aspects of Taylor’s Custom program is the opportunity to explore tonewoods and combinations that rarely appear together. Events like the Taylor Catch Event at NAMM give dealers a chance to secure guitars that can’t simply be ordered from a catalog.

That means many of these instruments are effectively one-off builds, and once they’re gone, the chances of seeing another identical guitar are slim.

If you’re looking for something truly unique—whether it’s a rare tonewood pairing, a NAMM-exclusive build, or simply a Taylor with a voice all its own—this collection represents some of the most distinctive guitars currently hanging on our walls.
